'Building Future Award 2016'
goes to Stefan Schulze-Hausmann
Stefan Schulze-Hausmann will be presented with the Building Future Award 2016 during the Light + Building press conference in Frankfurt am Main on 14 March 2016. With the biennial Building Future Award, which is endorsed by the Federal Ministry of Economics and Energy (Bundesministerium für Wirtschaft und Energie - BMWi), Messe Frankfurt honours personalities who have rendered outstanding services to sustainable social development through pioneering research and / or development work or exceptional social commitment. Following Australian nano-scientist Kostya Ostrikov (2012) and Austrian meteorologist and sustainability expert Helga Kromp-Kolb (2014), this year's award goes to the well-known German television presenter.

The primary reason for the jury's choice is Schulze-Hausmann's commitment to the 'German Sustainability Award', which he initiated in 2008. To this end, he brought together several personalities from the fields of politics, business, research, the media and society to launch an award that, over the years, has given numerous companies a highly visible incentive to act in the interests of sustainability. Selection for the award gives them the chance to position themselves as pioneers of a future-oriented development in a verifiable, serious and credible way.
Moreover, the renown of the award helps lend a positive connotation to the notion of sustainability among the general public and to anchor it in their awareness. In this connection, mention must also be made of Schulze-Hausmann's role from 2000 to 2009 as host of the ceremony for the presentation of the 'German Environmental Award', by the German President, and his activities as a television presenter. Since 1989, Stefan Schulze-Hausmann has hosted a variety of programmes for the ZDF and 3sat television stations, e.g., the national popular-science programme 'nano'. This daily technology and future magazine focuses on ecological, technological and socio-political subjects and constantly demonstrates in a factual, informed and intelligible way the need for society as a whole to rethink its attitude towards the resources of the planet and inhabitants.
In the opinion of the jury, his long-running and multi-faceted commitment to sustainability has made Stefan Schulze-Hausmann a valuable and important ambassador in the German media world. Through his critical but constantly solution and future-oriented advocacy, he serves the cause of sustainability in a credible and persuasive way.
Messe Frankfurt presents the award every two years during the Light + Building trade fair in cooperation with the German Electrical and Electronic Manufacturers' Association (Zentralverband Elektro-technik- und Elektronikindustrie e.V. - ZVEI) and the Central Association of the German Electrical and Information Technology Trades (Zentralverband der Deutschen Elektro- und Informations-technischen Handwerke - ZVEH) under the patronage of the Federal Ministry of Economics and Energy (BMWi). As the world's leading forum for innovations in the field of lighting, electrical engineering and home and building automation, Light + Building presents future-oriented solutions for, inter alia, efficient energy management and resource conservation and thus represents the ideal platform for the Building Future Award.
